Ann began coaching me when I was Interim Dean and continued when I was named Dean. The experience has been excellent. She then began working with my leadership team to assist with individual goals as well as team building. In addition, Ann has led 2 leadership retreats for us. She helped me to know myself and the members of my team better. We now understand how to communicate more effectively as a team and are spending more time together socially, which is an added benefit.

Having heard colleagues talking about the wonderful experience they’d had working with Dr. Chinnis, when I ‘graduated’ to a new full-time executive role, I reached out to the person I thought could best help me prepare for success. No surprise, Ann was wonderful in helping me identify my personal work style and be aware of how that would impact my relationships with others on the leadership team. Ann facilitated a communication effectiveness retreat for the faculty and staff of the WVU School of Public Health. She was able to quickly adapt the content of the material to best meet our needs, as they became evident during the sessions. There was an immediate impact upon our team cohesiveness, effectiveness and understanding of one another.

At West Virginia University we have been on a “Journey to Excellence” for the past two years. As we strive to achieve a culture of excellence in everything from employee engagement and patient satisfaction to targeted clinical outcomes, we have made significant investment in training and coaching our leadership group.

Ann facilitated ten “Coaching for Excellence” clinics for approximately 300 of our leaders in which she provided expert, insightful training specific to conducting effective performance conversations. The response from attendees was overwhelmingly positive and many felt these sessions to be among the most helpful they had attended. As one who has been in multiple management roles throughout my career, I thought I knew every concept and tactic in the book. Not so! I walked away from one of Ann’s sessions with renewed confidence in my ability to have truly meaningful performance discussions with my employees.

Ann’s coaching helped me capitalize on my strengths in my current roles as well as identify areas that needed further development and how to improve these skills and responses in different situations. Her style put me at ease and allowed me to think out of the box for new career directions.

Dr. Ann Chinnis working with the chair of the department designed and ran a complex obgyn departmental retreat which included private MDs, academic MDs, residents, nurses and midwives from a large academic medical center. The goal of the retreat was to bring the participants together to facilitate a common belief in the need for a work environment founded in participatory respect for each other in our pursuit of excellence in women’s health care. Dr. Chinnis’ approach utilizing her experience, her sense of humor and the DISC process was immensely successful. The participants had a great weekend, gained new respect for each other and in the 6 months since the retreat have retained their enthusiasm for working to maintain a collaborative culture in the maintenance of the provision of excellence in health care.

Dr. Chinnis provided our large faculty with an understanding of our own diversity and provided us with some tools to better communicate. Having an opportunity to see our communication styles graphically represented and understand how others best could hear what we had to say will allow us to continue to grow and thrive as a department. The morning was professionally run and her experiences as an emergency physician made it that much easier to listen and learn.

My journey with Ann Chinnis has been extraordinary. I underestimated the power of highly effective coaching and found myself profoundly impacted during every session. Ann’s experience in academic medicine allowed her to understand my environment and focus immediately on my challenges. I was presented with the opportunity to take part in a professional coaching engagement by my department chair during a time when I was transitioning from a resident (in-training) physician to an attending (supervising) physician.
